MicroTape Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 5, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Wavefold Labs LLC (“Wavefold Labs,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use the MicroTape mobile application (the “App”). It supplements the Wavefold Labs Privacy Policy, which applies to our websites, accounts, products, and services generally. This Policy provides additional detail about MicroTape and controls if the two policies differ about an App-specific practice.

1. Summary

MicroTape is designed so your recordings stay under your control.

  • Audio recordings, recording titles and notes, optional recording locations, edits, and on-device analysis results are stored in MicroTape’s iCloud Drive container when iCloud Drive is available, or locally on your device when it is not.
  • MicroTape does not upload your audio, transcripts, recording titles, notes, saved locations, or content tags to Wavefold Labs, PostHog, or RevenueCat.
  • Sound classification and speech-topic tagging are performed on your device. Any temporary transcript used to generate speech-topic tags is processed in memory and is not saved as a transcript by MicroTape.
  • We collect limited product analytics and subscription information as described below.
  • We do not sell personal information, show third-party ads, or use your data for cross-app advertising or tracking.

2. Information Handled by the App

A. Recordings and recording metadata

When you use MicroTape, the App may create and store:

  • Audio recordings and rendered or exported audio files;
  • Recording identifiers, titles, notes, creation dates, duration, format, and file information;
  • Edit and playback settings, including trim points, fades, gain, equalization, tape effects, varispeed, and loop settings;
  • Relationships between an original recording and a rendered recording;
  • Waveform representations generated from the recording as needed; and
  • On-device analysis results, such as sound labels, confidence values, and speech-topic tags.

This content is stored in the App’s iCloud Drive container when iCloud Drive is available. If iCloud Drive is unavailable, the App stores it in local app storage on your device. Temporary in-progress recordings and render files may also be held in local app storage while the App finishes processing them.

Wavefold Labs does not receive this content from the App. Apple processes iCloud data under your Apple Account and Apple’s privacy terms.

B. Microphone access

MicroTape requests microphone permission so you can record audio and monitor input level. The App accesses the microphone when you choose to record. You can revoke microphone permission in iOS Settings, but the App will not be able to make new recordings without it.

C. Optional location information

If you opt in to saving recording locations, MicroTape requests When In Use location access and obtains a location when a new recording is created. The App may store:

  • Latitude and longitude;
  • Approximate horizontal accuracy;
  • The date and time the location was obtained; and
  • An optional place name returned by Apple’s MapKit service.

You may also select or change a location manually in the App. A saved location is attached to the recording’s MicroTape metadata. It is not embedded in exported audio files and is not included in our analytics events.

Location saving is off until you opt in. You can turn off Save Recording Locations in the App’s Settings and can revoke location permission in iOS Settings. Turning the feature off does not remove locations already attached to recordings; you can remove or change those locations from the recording details.

Apple may process location queries when providing MapKit search, map, or geocoding results under Apple’s privacy terms.

D. On-device audio and speech analysis

When On-Device Content Classification is enabled, MicroTape may use Apple system frameworks to analyze a recording on your device and create sound tags. If speech is detected and supported Apple on-device models are available, the App may temporarily transcribe selected portions of a recording in memory and use an on-device language model to generate short topic tags.

MicroTape saves the resulting sound and topic tags with the recording. It does not save the temporary transcript and does not send the audio, transcript, or tag text to Wavefold Labs or our analytics and subscription providers.

If a required Apple speech asset is not installed, MicroTape may offer to ask Apple’s system services to download it. Apple controls that download and processes related technical data under Apple’s privacy terms.

You can turn off On-Device Content Classification in the App’s Settings. Turning it off stops future automatic analysis but does not remove tags already saved with recordings. You can remove saved tags in the App.

E. App preferences

The App stores settings such as recording format, sample rate, stereo preference, input gain, playback speed, scrub behavior, location opt-in status, and content-classification preference in local device storage. These preferences are used to operate the App and are not intentionally included in analytics events unless specifically described below.

3. Information We Collect

A. Product analytics

MicroTape uses PostHog to understand whether key features work and how the App is used. The App sends events such as:

  • App lifecycle events;
  • Recording started, saved, failed, played, exported, rendered, or deleted;
  • General media attributes such as recording, playback, export, or render duration rounded to whole seconds, and file format;
  • Tape tool usage by tool type, without tool parameter values;
  • On-device analysis started, completed, cancelled, failed, or unavailable, and the number of tags produced;
  • Paywall viewed, subscription purchased, subscription restored, whether a subscription entitlement is active, and whether active access was purchased or family-shared; and
  • Whether key operations succeeded or failed, without error messages, descriptions, or error-type strings.

PostHog assigns a random anonymous identifier to the App installation so activity from that installation can be measured over time. This identifier is not associated by MicroTape with RevenueCat’s identifier or an App Store account. PostHog may also receive IP address, general device and network information, device model, operating-system and App version, locale, time zone, timestamps, and similar technical properties supplied by its iOS SDK or created when an event is received.

We do not intentionally include audio, recording titles, notes, file contents, transcript text or statistics, tag text, tool parameter values, error messages or descriptions, error-type strings, or saved recording coordinates in PostHog events. MicroTape does not enable PostHog session replay.

We use this information to measure reliability, diagnose problems, understand feature adoption, and improve MicroTape. It is not used for third-party advertising or tracking across other companies’ apps or websites.

B. Subscription and purchase information

MicroTape uses Apple’s App Store and RevenueCat to offer and manage subscriptions without requiring a MicroTape login. RevenueCat assigns a random anonymous App User ID to the App installation. MicroTape does not intentionally associate that identifier with PostHog’s anonymous identifier.

Apple and RevenueCat may process information such as:

  • RevenueCat’s anonymous App User ID and related aliases;
  • Product and entitlement identifiers;
  • Purchase, original purchase, expiration, renewal, refund, transfer, and trial information;
  • App Store transaction and original transaction identifiers;
  • Storefront, price, currency, and subscription status;
  • App version, device or operating-system details, IP-derived country, request dates, and first- or last-seen dates; and
  • App Tracking Transparency status and other technical attributes automatically handled by the RevenueCat SDK.

MicroTape does not ask you to create an account and does not intentionally provide RevenueCat with your name, email address, Apple Account email, or Apple Account password. RevenueCat may process App Store transaction data as needed to verify and administer purchases.

Apple processes payments. Wavefold Labs does not receive your full payment-card number or Apple Account password.

C. Network and operational information

When the App communicates with PostHog, RevenueCat, Apple, or other network services, those services may process standard network information such as IP address, request time, response status, and user-agent or device information. We and our service providers may use this information to deliver the service, prevent abuse, monitor availability, and investigate errors.

D. Communications with us

If you contact us for support or otherwise communicate with us, we receive the information you choose to provide, such as your email address, message, and any files or diagnostic details you attach. Please do not send us private recordings unless we specifically ask for one and you have the right to share it.

4. How We Use Information

We use information described in this Policy to:

  • Provide, maintain, and secure MicroTape;
  • Save and process recordings on your device or through your iCloud account;
  • Provide optional recording-location and on-device analysis features;
  • Process, verify, restore, and administer subscriptions;
  • Diagnose crashes, errors, failed recordings, exports, and subscription problems;
  • Understand feature use and improve the App’s design, performance, and reliability;
  • Respond to support requests and other communications;
  • Prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents;
  • Comply with law and enforce our agreements; and
  • Protect the rights, safety, and property of users, Wavefold Labs, and others.

Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we process information as needed to perform our contract with you, based on our legitimate interests in operating and improving the App, with your consent, and/or to comply with legal obligations.

5. How We Disclose Information

We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not disclose personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We disclose limited information to service providers only as needed for the purposes described in this Policy:

  • Apple: App distribution, payments, subscription management, iCloud Drive storage, maps and geocoding, speech-asset downloads, and operating-system frameworks;
  • RevenueCat: Subscription offerings, purchase verification, entitlement status, restoration, and subscription analytics;
  • PostHog: Product analytics and technical diagnostics.

We require service providers acting on our behalf to protect information consistently with this Policy and applicable law. Each provider may also process information under its own privacy terms when acting independently.

We may also disclose information:

  • To comply with law, regulation, legal process, or a valid government request;
  • To investigate fraud, security problems, or violations of our terms;
  • To protect the rights, property, or safety of Wavefold Labs, our users, or others;
  • In connection with a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of all or part of our business, subject to appropriate confidentiality and notice requirements; or
  • With your direction or consent.

6. Retention and Deletion

Recordings and local content

Recordings and their metadata remain in local storage or the MicroTape iCloud Drive container until you delete them, delete them through the Files app, or remove them through your Apple Account’s iCloud storage controls. Deleting a recording in MicroTape removes its audio and MicroTape metadata from the storage location the App is using. Apple may retain iCloud copies or backups according to Apple’s policies and your Apple Account settings.

Deleting the App removes App data stored locally in its private container, subject to device backups and operating-system behavior. Deleting the App does not necessarily delete files stored in iCloud Drive. You can manage those files through iCloud Drive and the Files app.

Temporary files and transcripts

MicroTape removes temporary share and render files when they are no longer needed or during later cleanup. Temporary speech transcripts are held in memory only for on-device topic generation and are not intentionally persisted by MicroTape.

Analytics and operational records

We retain analytics and operational records only for as long as reasonably necessary to understand App use, improve reliability, secure the service, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Retention may vary by record and service provider. When information is no longer needed, we delete it or de-identify it, unless law requires longer retention.

Subscription records

Apple and RevenueCat retain subscription and transaction records according to their own retention schedules. We may retain limited records available through those services for as long as reasonably needed to provide and restore subscription access, maintain financial and audit records, prevent fraud, resolve disputes, and comply with legal obligations.

Support communications

We retain support correspondence for as long as reasonably needed to respond, keep a record of the resolution, improve support, and comply with legal obligations.

7. Your Choices and Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of personal information we control, or to object to or restrict certain processing. You may also have the right to withdraw consent and appeal a decision about a privacy request.

You can control much of MicroTape’s data handling directly:

  • Delete recordings and their metadata in the App;
  • Remove saved sound or speech-topic tags;
  • Remove or change a recording’s saved location;
  • Turn off future automatic location saving in MicroTape Settings;
  • Turn off future on-device content classification in MicroTape Settings;
  • Revoke microphone or location permission in iOS Settings;
  • Manage MicroTape files through the Files app and iCloud settings;
  • Manage or cancel subscriptions through your Apple Account; and
  • Stop future App collection by discontinuing use and deleting the App.

MicroTape does not currently provide an in-app switch for product analytics. You may contact us to object to analytics processing or request deletion of analytics, subscription, or support information we control. Because the App uses pseudonymous identifiers and does not ask for contact information, we may need information supplied by the App or your subscription records to locate relevant data. We may retain information where required by law or where an applicable exception applies.

To make a privacy request, email hello@wavefoldlabs.com with the subject “MicroTape Privacy Request.” We may need to verify your request before acting on it.

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. Network communications use encrypted HTTPS connections, and Apple provides security controls for device and iCloud data. However, no storage or transmission method is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for securing your device, Apple Account, backups, and any files you export or share.

9. International Data Transfers

Wavefold Labs and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries where privacy laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we use lawful safeguards for international transfers.

10. Children’s Privacy

MicroTape is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can investigate and delete it as appropriate.

11. External Sharing

When you export or share a recording, you choose the destination through Apple’s share sheet or file interfaces. After you share a file, the recipient or selected third-party app or service controls its use. Review the recipient’s privacy practices before sharing sensitive recordings.

MicroTape does not embed a recording’s saved MicroTape location metadata in exported audio, but the recording itself may reveal personal or sensitive information through its sound or speech content.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the App, our practices, or legal requirements change. We will post the revised Policy and effective date and provide reasonable advance notice of material changes when appropriate or required by law. Changes are effective when posted unless a later effective date is stated. We encourage you to review the current Policy when App updates are released.
